This fascinating photo captures Avoca, Nebraska, in its early days, with dirt streets, vintage cars, a classic barber pole, and townsfolk strolling along the sidewalks. Avoca, located in Cass County, was founded in 1882 when the Missouri Pacific Railroad extended its line to the area.
The town quickly developed as a hub for agriculture, trade, and community life. By the early 1900s, Avoca was home to bustling businesses, including general stores, blacksmith shops, and barbershops like the one in this photo. The men in the photo represent the hardworking spirit that shaped the town’s growth— in Avoca.
Avoca remains a small but vibrant community, proud of its rich history and strong ties to Nebraska’s agricultural heritage.

COME ON OVER!
This is the way country music started out, with acoustic instruments, before electricity. People sat out on the lawn, on the porch, or in a friend’s house and played their instruments together.
Enjoy the originality of music which is still present in many circles of friends.
