The limestone found around Rome played a crucial role in the history of the city's catacombs. Originally, the Etruscans, who predated the Romans, excavated the soft tufa (a type of limestone) for mining purposes. These mines were later repurposed by both Jewish and Christian communities as underground places for religious gatherings
