One pint of donated blood can save up to three lives because the donation can be separated into its three components: red blood cells, plasma, and platelets. Each of these components can be transfused to different patients, with red blood cells helping trauma victims and those with anemia, plasma used for burn victims, and platelets for cancer patients.
